What CPSO fees do I need to pay for my medical corporation?

CPSO charges an initial Certificate of Authorization application fee for a new Medical Professional Corporation, plus an annual renewal fee to keep the Certificate active. Both are deductible corporate expenses. Verify the current-year amounts on the CPSO Fee Schedule before budgeting, as they are reviewed periodically.

Fees are set by CPSO’s Council and published in the CPSO Fee Schedule. As of 2026, the categories are: initial Certificate of Authorization application, annual renewal, and change-of-information filing (share structure change, name change, director change).

Timing. The initial fee is paid at application; the Certificate is typically issued within four to six weeks of a complete application. The annual renewal is due each fiscal year of the MPC; failure to renew results in CPSO suspending the Certificate, and unauthorized professional service by an MPC without an active Certificate is a professional misconduct issue.

Deductibility. CPSO fees are ordinary and necessary corporate expenses under ITA s. 18(1)(a); they are deductible against the MPC’s active business income. Personal CPSO licensing fees (paid by the physician personally as a licence-to-practice cost) are separately deductible on the physician’s T1 under ITA s. 8(1)(i)(vii) as an employment expense or on Schedule 4 under legal fees / other deductions if paid personally without corporate reimbursement.

Practical: pay CPSO corporate renewal through the MPC’s corporate credit card so the paper trail supports the corporate deduction on audit.

Note: Any CPSO-required regulatory notification (change of directors, change of share structure, business address change) has its own filing fee. Budget for these when planning any corporate reorganization.
